Lead Teacher : Miss Jennie Simmons

At St Mary’s College, our bespoke PSHE curriculum is designed to empower students to become confident, self-assured, emotionally-literate young people who can successfully negotiate risks in their lives and make rational, reasoned decisions about themselves and their circumstances, both in school and out. The PSHE programme has been constructed in-house to meet the needs of our students, to incorporate the 9 protected characteristics and develop our young people to be remarkable individuals who contribute positively to their communities and thrive in modern Britain.

Our carefully considered spiral-curriculum enables our students to approach (and then revisit) a wide range of topics within the three key strands of study- Relationships, Health and Wellbeing, Living in the Wider World- in an engaging and age-appropriate way which can be seen through our curriculum plan for Years 7-11. The PSHE curriculum supports and supplements the wider curriculum in the delivery of statutory RSE topics to ensure students can successfully navigate their lives outside of St Mary’s.

PSHE forms an integral part of the Personal Development portfolio at St Mary’s College; many of the topics and skills developed in our sessions are strengthened further through a suite of mutually-reinforcing opportunities and initiatives including, but not restricted to: assemblies, form time sessions, personal tutor meetings, extra-curricular opportunities and personal development immersion events.
